Toyota and Lexus hybrid sales soar…
Hybrids, some people love them, some people loathe them, but there is no doubt we should all respect them.
Why, because hybrids represent the first real major step away from the traditional internal combustion engine.
Sure sales generally didn’t meet expectations early on, but if Toyota’s hybrid sales in 2012 are anything to go buy the hybrid is here to stay in a big way.
For the first time ever Toyota is on track to sell one million hybrids this year.
Globally a record 630,048 Toyota and Lexus petrol-electric hybrids were purchased in the six months to June 30.
That’s more than the total of 628,989 hybrids sold during the whole of last year!
In all 4.2 million Toyota and Lexus hybrid vehicles have been sold since the Prius first went on sale in Japan in 1997.
Toyota Australia executive director sales and marketing Matthew Callachor has told Behind the Wheel hybrids are a success story.
“Hybrid vehicles are now at the stage of being mainstream vehicles noted for their performance, fuel efficiency and quiet driving,”
“As tangible proof of Hybrid Synergy Drive’s environmental record, these sales have already contributed to a reduction in automotive emissions of some 26 million tons of CO2.” he said.
