In our final look at the Hyundai Sonata range, we examine the mid-spec 2015 Hyundai Sonata Elite. Possessing the same 2.0L turbo petrol engine as the top of the range Premium, the Elite is equal in the power stakes just with a few less features.

You get all the driving fun out of the 180kW and 350Nm powertrain with a sports auto transmission that performs like a sporty hatch, housed inside a deceptively smart-looking shell. Once again, I couldn’t help but enjoy myself and slip it into Sport mode (one of three driving modes) and get the most out of this machine.

But, once again, this comes at a cost. Petrol consumption is a little on the high side even with moderate driving and time spent in ‘Eco’ mode. Still registering around the 11 litre per 100kms, the Elite is a good drinker like its big brother.

Cruising around is effortless. Suspension is great from the driver’s seat, there is power when you need it, and it handles brilliantly made all the more comfortable to manoeuvre with your hands on the leather wrapped steering wheel.

Only downside, as I mentioned in my review of the Premium, is the engine doesn’t sound the way you expect especially when stepping on the accelerator and is louder than it should be.

On top of the base model, the Sonata Elite comes standard with:

  • Leather appointed seats
  • Powered driver’s seat
  • 8” touchscreen
  • Dual zone climate control
  • Electric mirrors
  • Carbon fibre dash door inserts
  • Alloy chrome door handles
  • Stainless steel scuff plates
  • Powered smart boot
  • Smart key push button start

This particular package retails from $36,990, seven thousand more than the Active and five thousand less than the Premium.

That means features missing from the Elite include powered passenger’s seat, electric park brake, led map lamps, auto dimming mirror, auto defog, rain sensing wipers, rear door blinds, bending lamps, puddle lamps, panoramic roof, and 18” alloy wheels.

From inside the cabin the blueprint is much the same with the extra buttons on the centre dash for sat nav, phone and audio controls; just with the exclusion of heated and ventilated front seats. The instrument panel is also plainer, devoid of the LCD driver info display.

The 2015 Hyundai Sonata Elite; another quality Sonata sedan for those on a tighter budget but with the same quality performance found in the top Sonata Premium. No matter which of the range you prefer, definitely one of the better all-round performers I’ve driven all year.
