2015 Hyundai Tucson Active X review from Simon Lai.
The Tucson is back!
Replacing the highly successful Hyundai ix35, this time in the medium sized SUV class (where it should be), the Tucson is sure to win the hearts of many buyers yet again.
My first foray into the new range was with the 2015 Hyundai Tucson Active X, the (currently) lowest spec variant in the line up until the Tucson Active starts filtering through towards the end of the year.
The rest of the range consists of the Elite and Highlander which are available in turbo petrol and diesel engines and AWD.
But let’s start at the bottom. The auto Active X has a 2.0L petrol engine and a six-speed sports automatic transmission. This 2WD offering also comes in a six-speed manual version.
The pickup in the Active X isn’t so sprightly with 121kW and 203Nm under the bonnet but is more than sufficient for everyday driving. The vehicle takes a little while to get going and has a tendency to over rev itself before shifting gears.
If you want more purchase the turbo engine varieties should work a treat.
Overall, the Hyundai Tucson really is an improvement on the preceding ix35.
With improved handling, steering and suspension which is now a standard expectation from the manufacturer.
The ride is comfortable and quiet and steering is smooth and effortless, leaving me with no objections.
Although I didn’t find the Active X disappointingly heavy on fuel use. Even with some generous use of Eco mode, it still recorded 10L/100km and the tank seemed to run out pretty fast.
Another downer is the ANCAP safety rating of only 4 stars which Hyundai will be working to rectify. You can read more about it here.
The Active X model has a fairly basic but smart interior filled with black plastic however to my amazement the seats are leather appointed.
Legroom is satisfactory though the back seats seem less well padded and more rigid than the front. These of course fold down to extend the space in the boot through the use of a side lever.
Storage areas include two front seat pockets, a sunglasses compartment and underfloor storage in the boot.
Features include a 7” touchscreen, Bluetooth, mono LCD driver info display, reversing camera and rear sensors, cargo blind, front and rear fog lamps, roof rails, DRLS, hill start control and downhill brake control.
This grade of Tucson is integrated with Apple CarPlay technology which gives it bonus marks, a feature which surprisingly few new cars have despite the immensely connected world we live in.
A relatively minimal offering that still provides the quality Hyundai drive in an attractive package and we look forward to taking a look at the rest of the series in coming months.
