Simon Lai road tests and reviews the 2015 Mitsubishi ASX XLS Diesel
I’m back behind the wheel of the Mitsubishi ASX, but this time at the other end of the spectrum.
Following on from my feel of the manual ASX LS a few months back, this week I test drove the 2015 Mitsubishi ASX XLS diesel.
Retailing for $35,990 the XLS is a step up from the LS boasting more features and the diesel is also 4WD capable while the 2WD petrol version is priced from $31,490 and comes with a CVT gearbox.
Under the bonnet the diesel houses a 2.2L engine and the petrol has an engine size of 2.0L producing the same number of kilowatts (110) but less torque (197Nm).
Fuel economy was comparable to the petrol LS at 9.0L/100km (according to the meter) which, being a diesel, was baffling as the fuel tank had plenty of reserves.
I couldn’t fault the sports style automatic, after being satisfied with the manual transmission, and found it responsive when needed.
Though not immediate down low, acceleration is powerful beyond that at any speed, made all the more efficient by the moderate size of the SUV. You certainly get the most out of the 360Nm of torque.
Other aspects of the drive are pretty much the same as the previous model I tested (suspension, visibility, handling etc.) and is generally fuss-free.
The more speccy XLS grade comes with a better selection of features: smart keyless entry, one touch start system, rain sensing wipers, dusk sensing headlamps, heated front seats and powered driver seat, and a larger 7” touch screen with 3D satellite navigation.
There is a great digital radio - a recent inclusion - although the buttons surrounding the screen are too numerous and not the most refined.
The interior is panelled with black plastic but isn’t noticeably cheap-looking and the seats are a bit spiffy with leather trims. And if you look up there is a beautifully big panoramic roof that has an interestingly segmented retractable cover.
Some features common to both variants that are worth mentioning again are reverse parking sensors and camera, DRL, ISOfix ports and roof rails.
One minor issue I had was with the heated seat controls. While it makes sense to have them next to the seats, locating them deep between the seat and the centre console beside the seatbelt anchor makes accessibility a bit tricky.
Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to take the ASX off-road though the mode select button is prominent, easy to use and selections in 4WD are quick and painless.
The rear seats fold down of course creating more boot space. Other storage spaces can be found on the door pockets, in the average sized glovebox and a split lid in the floor console with extendable armrest.
Seven air-bags are standard in the ASX range which come with a five star ANCAP safety rating.
The 2015 Mitsubishi ASX XLS diesel is a stock standard, pragmatic – some might say boring – SUV option. Having said that, it possesses most of the important features an owner would require, has a comfortable ride and a well placed price for some off-road ability.
