At Behind the Wheel, we nominated the Citroën Grand C4 Picasso for Car of the Year back in 2014. Twice in fact.
I got back into one this week and the 2016 Citroën Grand C4 Picasso is as good now as it was then.
The Grand C4 Picasso is a perfect family car –roomy, great visibility, safety and fantastic comfort features.
The first thing you notice is a unique layout in the cabin and its sparseness, but this is no surprise when it comes to a Citroën.
What you do get is a gigantic 12” panoramic screen in the centre top dash which provides all information for the car, entertainment and sat nav in HD quality. And as if that’s not enough there is also the 7” touch screen in the usual location for every other function.
The gears are located on the steering column as a stalk and is weird at first but can make things faster once you get accustomed to it being on the right.
This frees up the space in the middle creating a large floor console bin and another storage pocket in the centre console, as well as giving occupants the feeling of more personal space.
The Grand C4 Picasso comes standard with a list of features as long as your arm:
- Keyless entry and push button start
- Dual zone automatic air conditioning with 2nd row vents and controls
- 360° Vision, park assist and blind spot monitoring
- Front and rear sensors
- Satellite Navigation
- Electronic handbrake with hill start assist
- Automatic headlights and rain sensing windscreen wipers
- Front fog lights with static cornering function
- Halogen headlights with washer jets and LED DRLs
- Automatic electrically adjustable folding door mirrors with puddle lights which dip when reversing
- Tyre pressure monitors and inflation kit
And it’s pretty amazing that you get all these features with terrific build quality for a reasonably low price of $44,990.
The seats themselves are in a black and grey cloth trim which aren’t flashy but are made of durable material and are well constructed.
The third row of seats sit in the floor under a foldable panel and pop right up with the pull of one cord.
Second row seat can also be put down from the back in a similar fashion making for a very quick transition.
It may take some time to learn what all the levers and straps control but there’s no doubting the build quality and intelligent design of the Picasso seats.
Everything feels solid and moves with a definite motion without a hint of flimsiness or unreliability.
The vehicle I was given the keys to also had the optional extras of 18″ Alloy Wheels and an electric tailgate.
On the road it’s no slouch either and would have to be to tow your family of seven.
Initial acceleration does make you wait but being a diesel it has a decent amount of torque - 370Nm at 2000rpm - so moves along nicely once you get going.
Every other factor combines well to provide a pleasant and effortless drive experience with good steering, braking, suspension and handling it makes it easy to manoeuvre.
But the best part of sitting in the cockpit must be the visibility. With large windows in front of you including a panoramic windscreen that comes almost up to your head and a massive quarter (more like half) window, the driver can see all around with the feeling of being outside.
This view of the outside extends to the top with a huge panoramic roof great for back passengers when sight-seeing around the big city. The only downside is the electric sunblind which doesn’t cut out a lot of light when closed.
Occupants won’t have to worry about safety either with lane departure warning, active cruise control, collision warning, blind spot monitoring and active seat belts that give a warning by repeatedly vibrating when you drift out of your lane as well as pre-tensioning in the event of an impending collision.
It’s another great, but surprisingly, little known offering by Citroën that deserves more attention. The 2016 Citroën Grand C4 Picasso has all the necessary components to make this a great family car topped off with a 6 year, unlimited km warranty.
