New BMW 5 Series gets Alpina tweaks

We can’t wait to drive the new all-wheel drive BMW M5, now though comes news that there will be a version that takes things even further, and in a slightly different direction.

Alpina are getting their hands on the new BMW 5 Series and creating what they are claiming will be one of the fastest production diesel cars in the world.

The 2018 Alpina D5 S will feature BMW’s 3.0 litre straight six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine (as found in the 530d) and tuning it to produce 240kW of power and 700Nm of torque.

They’re talking a 0-100km/h sprint time of just under 5.0 seconds and a top speed onwards of 275 km/h.

Interestingly, the engine will rely on an ‘AdBlue’ exhaust gas treatment system to help it meet Euro6 emissions regulations.

The hefty power and torque gets to the ground by way of the BMW xDrive system, but with an Alpina-specific rear biased torque distribution.

In Australia, we can only expect the Alpina offering in sedan form, a version based on the new 5 Series Tourer (or wagon) is being built for left-hand drive markets only.

There will also be a petrol-powered version, though we haven’t got official data on that one to bring you just at the moment.

BMW Alpina tell us the D5 S combines excellent dynamics and extraordinary performance characteristics.

While other Alpina enhancements will include sport suspension, 20“ forged alloy wheels and a full-colour digital instrument panel (as above).

We’ll bring you more news, including updates around Australian availability and pricing, as those details come to hand in our BMW News section.
