Sources have told the global news source that the joint-venture could have a focus on electric vehicles.

To gain access to the booming and potentially lucrative Chinese car market, foreign car brands need to team up with domestic players, such as Great Wall.

“We are in discussions with Great Wall about setting up a joint venture to produce cars in Changshu,” a unnamed BMW executive was quoted as saying.

BMW already has a joint venture in China with Brilliance China Automotive Holdings, though that same unnamed BMW spokesperson said that arrangement was likely to continue regardless.

While the report says another source believes the new joint venture in the eastern city of Changshu would not deal with petrol or diesel powered cars, indicating a focus on electric vehicles was likely.

It’s speculated that the deal could result in electric-powered MINI vehicles being built and sold in China by the joint venture.

Any deal would also need to be approved by the Chinese government before getting underway.
