Iveco/FPT unveils Cursor 13 NP engine

CNH Industrial’s FPT Powertrain Technologies has just unveiled the new Cursor 13 NG engine at Iveco HQ in Italy.

We were on hand for the unveiling and can confirm the new engine brings 460hp/2000Nm.

Promising up to 10% better efficiency than a comparable diesel, the engine can run on LNG, CNG and is fully bio-methane compatible.

FPT Cursor 13 NG Key Data:

  • Output - 460hp/2000Nm
  • Transmission - exclusively mates to an AMT transmission (with new tech that prevents torque loss when changing gears)
  • 90,000km service intervals
  • More than 1,500km range
  • 90,000km service intervals

The engine uses spark ignition and to overcome heat issues that normally affect that technology FPT have developed new water-cooled turbocharger tech, while the engine also gets a cast iron exhaust manifold that helps dispel heat.

A three way catalyst promises less maintenance due to fewer components and to paraphrase Pierpaulo Biffalo, FPT’s head of product engineering, “if it isn’t there it can’t break”.

Newly developed fuel injectors also feature, along with computer controlled technology which eliminates knocking (adjusting settings on each cycle).

The engine manufacturer also highlighted the benefits surrounding weight and space savings from having a powertrain that runs on one fuel, rather than up to three (AdBlue etc.) in a diesel.

With the majority of Europe’s long-haul trucks boasting outputs of between 430hp and 489hp FPT believes there will be strong demand for the new Cursor engine.
