Mazda CX-5 ends 2016 as Australia’s favourite Medium SUV…

The Mazda CX-5 has been crown champion of one of the most keenly-sought segments of the market – medium SUV.

VFACTS data shows the Mazda SUV managed to again find the most buyers in December 2016, though the Nissan X-TRAIL got within striking distance of the CX-5 in the final month of the year.

A new-generation of the Mazda CX-5 is coming soon to Australia (details here), it will be interesting to see if the soon to be superseded model can maintain its popularity ahead of that arrival.

While the Toyota RAV4, Mitsubishi Outlander and Hyundai Tucson all broke the 1000 sales barrier in December.

While across 2016 it was the Mazda CX-5 that continued to be Australia’s favourite offering in the segment.

Sales across the board increased 11.9% in the year with 142,622 total sales.

  • Toyota RAV4 - 19,526 (+5.9%)

  • Mitsubishi Outlander - 12,401 (+13.9%)
  • Kia Sportage - 10,924 (+43.8%)
  • Honda CR-V - 7,970 (-7.4%)
  • Ford Kuga – 4,395 (+1.2%)
  • Volkswagen Tiguan - 3,399
  • Jeep Cherokee - 2,079 (-66.2%)
  • Suzuki Grand Vitara - 1,639 (-27.1%)
  • Renault Koleos - 1,524 (+7.4%)
  • Volkswagen Golf Alltrack - 887 (+214.5%)
  • Land Rover Defender S/Wgn - 392 (-56.3%)
  • Skoda Octavia Scout - 341 (-22.0%)
  • Haval H6 - 57
  • Ford Escape - 37
  • Holden Captiva 5 - 36 (-99.4%)

And in the premium segment of the market it was the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class that managed to beat home rival - Land Rover Discovery Sport, although the Land Rover was the most-popular offering in the market in December.

Sales across 2016 increased in the category by a massive 45.2%!
