New-gen Mazda3 to debut in Tokyo?

Mazda teases new compact hatch model

Could this be a glimpse of the new-generation Mazda3? Mazda tell us they will be unveiling this new compact hatchback at the Tokyo Motor Show this month.

The info at this stage falls short of an official confirmation, however the Mazda3 is ready for a new-generation – in early 2018 it will be four years since the current generation of the big-selling offering landed.

Mazda say they will use the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show to showcase their new design direction, and the car brand’s theme for the show is to “celebrate driving”.

On the compact concept hatchback, they tell us it fuses next-gen tech and has a human-centered design philosophy for optimal functionality.

It will also herald in the first of an array of Mazda models powered by the SKYACTIV-X engine technology.

Utilizing compression ignition, the petrol engines are said to use less fuel and produce more power and torque than the current engines in the Mazda range.

We will keep you updated with further details on the fourth-generation Mazda3 as they come to hand.

Meantime, a model that we are unlikely to see in Australia will also debut in Tokyo - the CX-8.

The three-row crossover SUV will go on sale in Japan in December and will be aimed at luxury car type buyers who “both appreciate quality and need to seat more than five”.

Masamichi Kogai, Mazda’s President and CEO, says its exciting times for the brand.

“Our stand this year marks the beginning of a new era for Mazda.

“We will showcase a concept model with the design and technologies that will define a whole new generation of Mazda cars.”
