Mike and Diane are trying to choose between a caravan and campervan.
Hi guys, we heard you talking caravans recently and we have a curly question for you about whether we should buy a caravan or campervan.
We are going to be joining the grey nomads for a trip around Australia (on a budget) and are not sure whether we want to buy a campervan or a car/caravan combo.
We love the thought of not having to tow a caravan, i.e. not having to worry about unhitching it, parking it etc. but then we worry about lugging our beds and pots and pans and everything else everywhere we go with a camper.
We are going to be staying a couple of weeks at a time in caravan parks and want to take short trips around where were we are staying, this is where having the ability to leave the caravan behind is a bonus. What do you guys think?
Joel Helmes – Hi Mike and Diane, what a great question! I can see the advantages of not having to tow a caravan, but I reckon with two people on board the extra space of the caravan might be an advantage, particularly when you are planning on spending a good amount of time on the road.
As you say, there is also a huge advantage of being able to leave the caravan in the caravan park and go off exploring without having to lug everything with you.
While I do like campervans, one other drawback is that you don’t have anywhere near as much choice when it comes to the power of the vehicle that you are using to shift your house on wheels with.
With a caravan you have the choice of small sedans/wagons for small caravans, right up to big 4×4’s for the larger stuff. But buy a campervan and you are stuck with often only a fairly small motor, especially in the van based options.
Towing a caravan is a headache but I reckon it’s the easier, roomier and more convenient way to see Australia!
Simon Lai – I disagree. My family has had campervans for years – always based on Toyota HiAce vans and we went all around Australia in them. I reckon for two people to see Australia (as long as you like each other!) a campervan is ideal.
There are so many headaches with towing caravans, reversing them, parking them and hitching/unhitching them to name just a few. Sure you have more space with a caravan but you also have a lot more fuss.
My tip, get a campervan with a good quality, roomy annex and you will have a ball!
