Toyota range to be trimmed back?

Toyota tipped to cut model line-up by 50% in Japan

If you check out Toyota’s website in Japan you will see a lot of familiar faces, but also a whole array of different models that aren’t available in Australia.

Most of these exotic, unfamiliar (to us) models – ranging from micro cars, the box type models that the Japanese people seem to love, as well as vans, are built wholly for the domestic market.

In total, Toyota currently offers 60 different models in Japan, while in Australia we get just 19.

Now it looks likes Toyota is about to take the scissors to the extensive range that it offers in Japan.

Reuters reports the top-selling car company is planning on culling up to half of the 60 models by 2025 as Japanese car sales continue to decline.

The report comes on the back of information obtained by Reuters by an unnamed source with the car manufacturer.

A Toyota spokesperson declined to comment on the report, but said the company was pursuing strategies to maintain sales of at least 1.5 million annual sales in Japan, down slightly from the current 1.6 million Toyota sales in the market.

There was no word on which models might be in Toyota’s firing line, and whether any of those offerings form part of the Toyota Australia range.

We will keep you updated as any further detail comes to hand.
