UK bus market buoyed by double-decker growth

Nearly 28% jump in deliveries of double-deck buses in 2016…

The new bus and coach market in the UK has enjoyed a strong 2016 with the sector ending the year in the positive.

Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows 8,779 new buses were handed over to operators in the year, that figure represents an 8.0% jump on the industries 2015 result.

And it was double-deck buses that contributed to most of the growth with sales up a significant 27.9% in the year.

Minibuses also made strong gains, with registrations increasing 9.7%.

While demand for traditional single-deck vehicles declined by -6.2%.

“Many operators have been investing in their fleets over the past 12 months and getting the latest technology and low emission vehicles on to the roads is essential to help improve air quality.

“2016’s strong record of fleet renewal will aide that process.”
